Description
This beautiful throw pillow features the Polyscias scutellaria (Balfour aralia) entry in my “Trees on White” series. Aralias are a super common plant, both in gardens and indoors. I think the one in my yard may have been a house plant transplanted there several owners prior. But with several decades to spread it wings, it looks like no aralia I’ve ever seen before. It is, in every way, a tree. Similar to much larger oaks, its branches dip, get low to the ground, then swoop back up towards the sky. The scale of these dips and bends make them perfect places for orchids to thrive. New growth also tends to pop out here in these crooks. I absolutely love these young sprouts. The new leaves are a vivid mix of red and green, and are the perfect thinness to look amazing when backlit by the dusk sun. They also seem to me an homage to the aralia’s common house plant heritage, and a reminder of the tree they were meant to be.
